The Kansas City Chiefs have a new offensive tackle in the building after officially signing free agent LT D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal.
It's a truncated practice week with the Chiefs playing on Black Friday, which creates a bit of a challenge for Humphries to get integrated in time to play this week. That doesn't even consider the fact that he's returning from a serious knee injury and hasn't played since Week 17 of 2023.
So, will Humphries suit up at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for Week 13 against the Las Vegas Raiders? It's unlikely. Right now, the team is just working on getting Humphries accustomed to how they go about things in Kansas City.
"Yeah, listen, he looked healthy," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said on Wednesday. "Moving around, felt good. It's just a matter of him getting back in the swing and then also, compounded with just learning the offense, making sure he has terminology down, and he'll go from there."
As far as a timeline goes for him seeing the field, the Chiefs know the clock is ticking. They have five weeks left in the 2024 NFL regular season following their Week 13 tilt with the Raiders. They want to ensure they're giving Humphries all the tools to succeed and not throwing him to the wolves before he's ready.
"We'll just play by ear," Reid said. "I told him, 'Let's just keep the communication open and we'll figure it out.' That's kind of what we've done with the other guys that have come in. And we'll just keep open communication. He seems like a guy that shoots you straight. So, that's what I expect."
Humphries is just over nine months post-operation from his ACL injury. He insists he's healthy and ready to go whenever his new coaches say it's time to play.
"I mean, my body is fine," Humphries told reporters on Wednesday. "I'm just here. Whenever they tell me that it's time to go. Whenever Coach Reid said, it's time to go, that's when I'm going to go. But my body's fine."
The Chiefs will have a miniature bye week of sorts after their Week 13 game against the Raiders. They'll have nine days between their game on Friday and the Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers on "Sunday Night Football." Expect Humphries to have a much stronger chance of debuting with Kansas City in that particular AFC West showdown.
