One of the biggest stories in the NFL right now is the situation between the Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Jackson hasn't been able to come to an agreement with the Ravens on an extension. On Monday, Jackson revealed via Twitter that he requested a trade out of Baltimore on March 2.
Somehow, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got dragged into the Jackson drama on Monday thanks to some comments made by former NFL superstar defensive back Richard Sherman.
Sherman suggested on "The Richard Sherman Podcast" that Mahomes' decision to agree to a contract that wasn't fully guaranteed is one of the reasons why Jackson is having trouble getting a deal worked out.
“What pissed me off is when Kirk Cousins got his guaranteed deal, I thought all the quarterbacks from then on were gonna be like, ‘Hey, if it ain’t guaranteed, I ain’t taking it,’” said Sherman on his podcast. “Then Mahomes took that BS deal, just 10 years, and wanted it to look like half a (billion). But if you get half of that fully guaranteed everybody’s happier."
What Sherman doesn't understand is that Mahomes took that deal so the Chiefs would have the flexibility to make moves in the future. Mahomes obviously deserves to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. And while he wants to be paid what he deserves, he also wants Kansas City to have the ability to add the necessary pieces to the roster to consistently chase championships.
Last year, Mahomes alluded to being able to compete for Super Bowls as the main reason he signed his non-fully guaranteed contract.
"When I signed my deal, I knew I was going to be pretty set for life regardless of what the market kind of happens," said Mahomes last summer. "But you just keep playing…I mean money is one thing but when you get those Super Bowl rings at the end of your career, I think that’s going to be the thing that you look back upon and I think I’ve made enough money from the football field and obviously off of it as well that it won’t matter at the end of the day.”
Sherman doesn't seem to grasp the concept of Mahomes putting the team above himself.
Mahomes is doing just fine financially and he has a fresh Super Bowl ring coming his way. I'd say he's alright with the deal he signed.
