A wide receiver often connected to the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 NFL free agency period is officially off the market.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Atlanta Falcons have signed former Chicago Bears WR Darnell Mooney to a three-year deal worth $39M with $26M fully guaranteed. Why was Mooney often connected to Kansas City? Because he had the best season of his career under current Chiefs OC Matt Nagy

Having played under Nagy, he has some familiarity with the system that K.C. runs, which made him a good fit, but the problem here came down to price.

Mooney is a target with a lot of upside, but the truth is that he's three years removed from his best season and hasn't had over 400 yards and 2 touchdowns in a single year since. Albeit, he's had terrible quarterback play in Chicago during those two seasons. Still, that type of guaranteed money and a three-year contract weren't happening in Kansas City.

Brett Veach and the Chiefs were outbid for Mooney's talents in this case, and that's alright. There are still plenty of impactful free agent wide receiver options available to pair with some young incoming rookies, players whom Kansas City might be more comfortable making a substantial investment in.
