The fines keep piling up for the Kansas City Chiefs, this time the culprit being running back Isiah Pacheco.
The NFL has fined Pacheco $5,582 for unnecessary roughness against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. According to the league, Pacheco lowered his head to initiate contact during a third quarter rushing attempt. NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared the report and the video clip, which you can view below.
This is a point of emphasis that the NFL wants to crack down on this season. It is important to note that the officials did not penalize Pacheco on the play. The lack of consistency with players being fined for things that they were not penalized for has been a very frustrating issue over the past several years.
Pacheco likely wasn't penalized on the play because, frankly, he did nothing wrong. Pacheco was bracing himself for a straight-on collision with a Ravens defender, who was surrounded by two other Ravens defender that piled on top of him. This is one of many examples of the disconnect that exists between league officials and players.
Regardless, ball carriers are somehow going to have to be mindful of this if they don't want to get fined. It's getting to the point where players almost just have to go down as soon as contact is made and not try to fight for extra yards. The league is ultimately doing this is the name of player safety, but just like with the fine given to Chiefs tight end Peyton Hendershot, there's too much grey area to establish intent.
Player safety is extremely important, and the NFL has done a great job in some aspects in improving in that area, but sometimes it has to be accepted that football is a violent sport that isn't going to be 100 percent safe. Hopefully more progress can be made on these issues between the NFL and the NFLPA in the future.
