The Kansas City Chiefs got a pleasant surprise from the NFL on Tuesday.

The league officially announced 35 compensatory pick selections for the 2025 NFL draft. The Chiefs were typically projected to be in the running to earn a single compensatory pick in the draft's seventh round. As things currently stand, the league awarded them two picks.

Here are those two picks:

Round 7, Pick 251 (Pick 35 in Round 7)

Round 7, Pick 257 (Pick 41 in Round 7)

That last pick holds some meaning because it's actually the final pick in the 2025 NFL draft. That means fans will be sticking around to see who the Chiefs select with the famed annual pick dubbed, "Mr. Irrelevant."

Chiefs' history with Mr. Irrelevant

The Chiefs most recently selected Mr. Irrelevant in 2009, selecting K Ryan Succop out of the University of South Carolina with the final pick of the 2009 NFL draft. He's actually remembered as one of the best-ever Mr. Irrelevant selections. As a rookie, he won the Mack Lee Hill Award in Kansas City and surpassed Jan Stenerud in many categories. He spent five seasons in Kansas City, playing his final season with the Chiefs in 2013 when Andy Reid first arrived. Succop played in the NFL for over a decade, spending time with the Tennesee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He actually won a Super Bowl against Kansas City in Super Bowl LV with the Bucs.

Explaining the Chiefs' compensatory picks

Kansas City lost three qualifying compensatory free agents in 2024: Nick Allegretti, Tommy Townsend, and Willie Gay Jr. They gained just one compensatory free agent in 2024: Marquise Brown.

Brown canceled out Allegretti. Gay Jr. and Townsend earned the seventh-round picks. Early projections included Carson Wentz as a compensatory free agent signing for the Chiefs, but it turns out that he did not qualify, which is why Kansas City received the extra pick.
