Life just got a little bit easier for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 and that much harder for the Denver Broncos.
Broncos S Kareem Jackson was ejected for unnecessary roughness during the Week 8 game against the Green Bay Packers. He had a blatant helmet-to-helmet hit on Packers TE Luke Musgrave. It was the final straw in a rash of violations from the veteran defender, leading to the NFL to take swift and significant action against Jackson.
The NFL announced on Monday that Jackson had been suspended for four games, including the upcoming Week 8 game with the Chiefs.
Here was NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan's take on the severity of the play:
“On the play in question, you delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver, when you had the time and space to avoid such contact. You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to."
This is a big hit for the Denver defense ahead of a must-win game against Kansas City in Week 8. Back in the Broncos' 19-8 loss to the Chiefs on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 6, Jackson was a big-time playmaker. He has started seven games and he currently leads the Denver defense with two interceptions on the season.
Jackson is expected to appeal this suspension, but it's hard to believe that it'll be reduced to only a fine. This is a pattern of behavior for the Broncos' defensive back during the 2023 NFL season, and the league appears to be sending a message that it will no longer be tolerated.
