Minnesota Vikings CB Byron Murphy has sealed his fate for Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it's not even Wednesday yet.
Travis Kelce's relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift is perhaps the biggest story on the planet right now. Naturally, with her attending the past two Chiefs games, players are being asked about it.
With Kansas City on deck for Minnesota in Week 5, Murphy was asked about the Swift mania.
"Oh man, the social media is going crazy," Murphy said, via ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "And I'm not hating against it. That's the world we're living in. Is she going to come to this game? We're locked in, but that would be something. I've been watching her since I was a kid. That would be cool, for sure."
After that, the critical error began for Murphy. He revealed that he and the Vikings' defense have some plans for Kelce in Week 5. They're going to try and bang him up at the LOS, as every team does, but he's also planning to try and incite something by making comments about Swift.
"(It's) not (going to be cool) for him," Murphy said. "Because we're going to try to get our hands on him in front of her."
"I'm going to say something to him to get him going," he added.
It's never a good idea to spot your opponent's bulletin board material, but this plan from Murphy Jr. is extra strange when you consider some context heading into the game.
The last time Murphy played against the Chiefs was Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. He allowed five receptions on six targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in that game. Kelce had eight receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown in that one.
This season, Murpyh Jr. isn't exactly playing well. He's allowing more than 70% of passes into his coverage to be completed. He's done no favors to his teammates on defense either. They're allowing a league-low 82 receiving yards to the tight end position through four games this season, but they're also one of only 11 NFL teams to allow more than one receiving touchdown to tight ends this year.
The Vikings are also 1-3 with losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Los Angeles Chargers. Their one win of the season comes against a hapless 0-4 Carolina Panthers team. Murphy Jr. giving the Chiefs any extra motivation won't end well for him or his team.
