It's not every day that you see a team's backup kicker block a field goal, but that's exactly what happened during the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 8 tilt with the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs S Justin Reid is the backup kicker for Harrison Butker in Kansas City, notably coming in for the injured Butker in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. In Week 8, he got to show off the other end of his special teams prowess. In the third quarter, with Denver having an opportunity to go up 17-9, Reid blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt from Broncos K Wil Lutz.

Reid timed things up perfectly with the snap and nearly overran the block. Check it out:

This actually isn't the first time that Reid has blocked a kick in his NFL career. He blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt from Titans K Stephen Gostkowski in 2020 when he was still with the Houston Texans.

It's nearly impossible to block field goals on a consistent basis in the NFL today because the ball is kicked so quickly. Only 22 kickers had field goals blocked during the 2022 NFL season. However difficult, it's nice to see the special teams coverage and block units building some positive momentum in the past few weeks.
