Old AFC West foe could help keep the Kansas City Chiefs out of the playoffs as he comes out of retirement for one last ride
The Indianapolis Colts have officially signed former Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers to the practice squad amid Daniel Jones’ injury.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes hang by a thread, and it could be the performance of an old AFC West foe that eventually snips that thread.
After the results of Week 14, the Chiefs need a whole lot to go right for them to reach the NFL postseason. It starts with taking care of business and winning their final four games, but they’ll also need the Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts to stumble a few times over the past four weeks.
That didn’t seem too unreasonable when news broke that Colts QB Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in Week 14 and is out for the season. Then they learned that backup QB Riley Leonard had a knee injury and would be considered week-to-week. QB Anthony Richardson is also on injured reserve. They’re down to their fourth option at quarterback with postseason hopes slipping away. There was even some talk of rookie TE Tyler Warren being an emergency option at quarterback this week.
So, who will they rely upon to save their season? They’re going for the ultimate Hail Mary move in an act of desperation.
44-year-old Philip Rivers could play a part in keeping the Chiefs out of the playoffs
After a successful workout, the Colts are set to sign former Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers to the practice squad, according to multiple reports. Rivers has not played an NFL snap since the 2020 season, which was his farewell tour with the Colts and lone season outside of the AFC West. The now-44-year-old Rivers played the Chiefs 29 times during his NFL career with the Chargers, boasting a 14-15 record against Kansas City, throwing for 7,504 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions.
According to J.J. Watt, Rivers ran the same offense as the Colts for his son Gunnar’s high school football team. He spoke with Colts HC Shane Steichen, his former quarterback coach with Los Angeles, weekly about it, discussing both plays and film. That should give him an advantage when it comes to getting up to speed and preparing to play.
The Chiefs, as things stand, need Indy to go 2-2 in the final four weeks against the Seahawks, 49ers, Jaguars, and Texans to fall to a season record of 10-7. Kansas City holds the tiebreaker over Indy after defeating them at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 12. They need other things to happen as well, but if Rivers can manage to lift the Colts to even a 3-1 record, Kansas City will likely be kissing their playoff chances goodbye (unless the Chargers lose out), and Rivers will be exacting a little revenge.
