As was the case last offseason, it seems that analysts and sports talk hosts are clamoring for the Kansas City Chiefs to add another wide receiver to their roster.
The Chiefs currently have Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore as their top three wide receivers.
Moore is entering his second season in the NFL (250 receiving yards as a rookie in 2022), Toney has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his young career, and Valdes-Scantling hasn't totaled more than 690 receiving yards in a season since arriving in the NFL in 2018.
It's easy to see why there's some concern about the Chiefs' wide receivers room.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, however, isn't worried about the Chiefs' wide receivers. In fact, Mahomes said this week that he likes where Kansas City's wide receiver room is at.
"I think we're deep," said Mahomes on Wednesday when he was asked about KC's wide receivers room. "I think that's the biggest thing. Usually, you have a good feel for kind of who the guys are going to be and everything like that. But with this group, it's like every single guy, you're like, 'I can see him making a path and making the team'. And so I mean, that's what you want. You want that competition."
"I thought even the young guys that have stepped in have stepped in and done a lot of great things," added Mahomes. "And guys from other systems that have stepped in and [done] great things. So a lot of competition in that room will play out throughout OTAs and [training] camp, but I'm happy with where we're at in that in that receiving room."
It of course helps that Kansas City has the best tight end in the NFL in Travis Kelce (saying it "helps" is a massive understatement, but you get the point).
Mahomes is so talented that he doesn't need a "who's who" cast of wide receivers to find success. And in turn, that allows Chiefs general manager Brett Veach the opportunity to build a well-rounded roster that doesn't have many holes.
Having Mahomes is a cheat code for the Chiefs in a lot of ways. And saving money on wide receivers is certainly one of those ways.
