The Kansas City Chiefs have had significant issues within their wide receiver corps for the last two years.
However, it hasn't been for lack of trying. In 2023 Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore failed to develop, but Rashee Rice emerged strong late in the year. Then in 2024 Rice and Hollywood Brown missed most of the season with significant injuries.
Once again the Chiefs have to address the position. They have a good start in Rice and second-year WR Xavier Worthy, but not a lot behind them. There's also Rice's looming suspension that he will likely serve next year, which could influence Kansas City to invest more at WR than it typically does.
The NFL's free agent legal tampering period begins on March 10, with signings able to become official on March 12 – which marks the start of the new league year. Let's take a look at some potential WR options for the Chiefs in 2025.
Chris Godwin
Godwin's market will be interesting to monitor as he is coming off a season-ending dislocated ankle that required surgery back in October. When healthy, Godwin is one of the more productive WRs in the league, but he does have an injury history to consider.
That could potentially lower his cost. Godwin was having an excellent 2024 before going down, catching 50 passes for 576 yards and five touchdowns in seven games. Still just 28-years-old, Godwin should have a few good years left as long as he can stay healthy.
Amari Cooper
Cooper has been linked to K.C. as a trade candidate during seasons past. He's a bit on the older side at 30, but has posted over 1,000 receiving yards in three of his last five seasons. Cooper recorded the second-lowest yardage total of his career last year, but still averaged a solid 14.9 yards per catch.
When he was traded to the Buffalo Bills during the middle of last season, Cooper got lost in the shuffle a bit among their other pass catchers. He remains a good option for a short-term contract and being a complementary WR rather than a leading one.
TuTu Atwell
In 2024 Atwell recorded 42 receptions for 562 yards with the Los Angeles Rams. For being in an offense with WRs like Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, that is very solid production. Atwell is a speedster, posting a 4.3 40-yard dash at his pro day back in 2021.
Acquiring Atwell could relieve Worthy from being the only deep threat on the roster. He would also be great in the short passing game with his yards-after-catch ability. Atwell is a natural fit for coach Andy Reid's offense and should come at a good bargain.
K.J. Osborn
Osborn is another speedy WR who can lineup out on the boundary or in the slot. He had a productive first three years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, averaging 53 receptions, 615 yards, and five touchdowns during his time with them. In 2024 he signed with the New England Patriots and caught just seven passes for 57 yards.
New England's passing offense ranked dead last in the NFL last season, so Osborn's statistical regression is very likely not all on him. A change of scenery, a coach like Reid, and a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes could get Osborn right back on track.
Hollywood Brown
Brown was the Chiefs' prize free agent signing in 2024, but he injured his shoulder on the first play of preseason, costing him the first 15 games of the regular season. We'll never know how K.C.'s offense would have operated if it had Brown for the entirety of the season, but he did catch 12 passes for 141 yards in five games.
Brown has an extensive injury history to consider, but has played well when healthy. He knows Reid's system and is still just 27-years-old. Another one-year trial for Brown could be worth it for the Chiefs, especially since he won't have to be their top option at WR in 2025.
