With the 2025 preseason now in the books, Kansas City will focus in on assembling its 53-man roster and practice squad.

The Chiefs must trim their roster from 90 players to 53 by Tuesday’s 3:00 p.m. CT deadline. Once that’s done that, they will construct their practice squad — which will consist of 16 players. They may also have a 17th via the International Player Pathway Program if they choose to do so. Here is a reminder of the rules regarding the types of players who can be added to the practice squad:

  • Players who do not have an accrued season (I.E. rookies).
  • Players who were on the active roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season(s).
  • Up to four players per team with no more than two accrued seasons.
  • Up to six players per team with no accrued season limitations (I.E. vested veterans).

  • QB Chris Oladokun
  • WR Jimmy Holiday
  • WR Jason Brownlee
  • WR Elijhah Badger
  • TE Tre Watson
  • RB/FB Carson Steele
  • RB Michael Wiley
  • OT Esa Pole
  • OT Chukwuebuka “Chu” Godrick*
  • OG Mike Caliendo
  • DT Fabien Lovett
  • DE Malik Herring
  • LB Cole Christiansen
  • LB Brandon George
  • CB Melvin Smith
  • CB Kevin Knowles
  • S Major Williams

After struggling in K.C.’s Week 1 preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, Bailey Zappe played behind Oladokun during the final two games. Oladokun has been in the Chiefs’ offensive system for four years now, and provides a lot of value when the team has to prepare to face a mobile QB.

Brownlee and Holiday each made strong pushes for the 53-man roster, but a deep WR room will prevent them from making it. Keep an eye on one or both to potentially get plucked by another team after having strong preseason performances.

Caliendo entered training camp with hopes to compete for the starting left guard job, but was never given the opportunity. Getting outperformed by C.J. Hanson and Hunter Nourzad gets Caliendo stuck on the practice squad.

I believe the Chiefs will go heavier at DT than DE on the 53-man roster, so having a veteran like Herring waiting in the wings on the practice squad makes sense. The quality of depth in the secondary on the main roster quickly gets thin, so I have them keeping three DBs on the P.S.
