Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says the exact opposite of what everyone saw on TV in their loss to the Texans
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was visibly upset in the fourth quarter.
In the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football, the offense struggled mightily. It couldn’t convert on third and fourth downs when it needed to, and Patrick Mahomes wasn’t at his best. It didn’t help that his receivers weren’t giving him any help, either.
We saw a version of Mahomes that doesn’t come out often. Sure, listen to all of the casual fans out there who call him a crybaby because they think Mahomes cries to the refs. That’s the current era of football – everyone does that. This time, it was Mahomes who was clearly agitated about two of the fourth-down calls that he got from the sideline. Mahomes would throw his hands in the air and make a face so distinct that you could see it on TV that he would be unhappy with the call.
It oftentimes came off as a guy who just wasn’t happy with, or confident in, the play-calling in those situations.
“I’ll never question the decision to go for it, because I believe in the offense,” Mahomes told reporters after the game.
Mahomes has pretty much mastered the art of quarterback speak, or head coach speak. He doesn’t give anything away, and he says the exact thing he is trained to say. But his actions say differently.
Mahomes takes some blame for fourth down woes
On third downs, the Chiefs were 4-14, compared to the Texans’ 8-18. On fourth downs, the Chiefs were 1-3. On the one they converted, it was a goal-line run by Hunt, but that’s one of the plays that Mahomes was upset with. For the other two, he took responsibility, even if it wasn’t all on him.
“They did a good job on fourth down of passing off the crossers… I think I was a little late (to Rashee)… We’ve got to go out there and maximize those opportunities and give ourselves more,” Mahomes said.
This team is just shot at this point. It’s just checked out, and that’s OK– it has played a ton of football, and it played it at the highest level possible. It has been nearly perfect for 5-7 years. This is the one time it’ll be off in that time frame, and that’s OK. We cannot let our emotions get to us on the field, Mahomes, as everyone can see the frustration.
