Latest news puts Rashee Rice one step closer to suiting up in Brazil for Chiefs’ Week 1 tilt with Chargers
Another development for Rice.
News is continuing to pour in regarding Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice this week.
On Friday, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reported that Rice has been cleared to travel with the team to São Paulo, Brazil for their Week 1 regular season matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, September 5.
Having pled guilty to two felonies, there were questions as to whether or not Brazil’s immigration policies would allow Rice to enter the country. Now that it has been determined that he can, the last piece of the puzzle is if he’ll be available to play in the game or will be suspended.
Rice is set to have a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in New York with former U.S. district judge Sue L. Robinson to determine his the length of his suspension. According to Tom Pelissero, the NFL has proposed a double-digit game suspension for Rice, but the NFLPA believes it should be shorter than that.
A settlement could be reached before the hearing. If it does, there will be no need for the hearing and Rice will begin serving his suspension immediately. If the hearing does take place, Rice will be permitted to play in the Chiefs’ first four games, which are against the Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and the Baltimore Ravens.
This is a tricky situation for Rice and the Chiefs. If he settles before the hearing, his suspension will likely be very lengthy. However, if he waits until the hearing, it will take some time for the ruling to be handed down, which could jeopardize Rice’s availability for the postseason.
Furthermore, the NFL could appeal Robinson’s ruling, which would drag out the process even more. When Rice does inevitably begin his suspension, the Chiefs will be leaning on the likes of Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, Jalen Royals, JuJu Smith-Schuster and others to pick up the slack.
