The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense is coming off an awesome performance in which it shutout the Las Vegas Raiders last week.

It will look to keep that momentum going against the Washington Commanders on Monday night, who will be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels. Washington has struggled in the passing game so far this season, ranking 25th in the NFL in that department.

Veteran Marcus Mariota will get the start in Daniels’ place. Mariota is one of the more capable backup QBs in the league, and he and the Commanders’ offense will be getting a huge boost as their top two wide receivers are set to return from injury this week against Kansas City.

Chiefs S Bryan Cook is looking forward to facing Commanders WRs Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel

“We look forward to it,” Cook told the media about facing McLaurin and Samuel. “They’re great players. We are competitors, so we would like for them to have their their best foot forward, and we do the same. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“We’ve seen Deebo for a few years now. McLaurin is a a pretty good receiver, very fast. He’s explosive. I’m excited to see him back to. Injuries happen to everybody. I’m excited to see those guys back out there healthy and playing this week.”

Samuel was having a very good season before missing last week’s game, catching 34 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns, as well as rushing for 45 yards and one TD. As Cook alluded to, the Chiefs have faced Samuel several times, including twice in Super Bowls.

2025 has been the toughest year of McLaurin’s career. He missed all of training camp after he held out of offseason activities due to a contract dispute, and has only appeared in three games during the regular season as he’s battled through a quad injury.

However, McLaurin is one of the best, and most underrated, WRs in the NFL when healthy. If he and Samuel can remain injury free, they could become one of the better tandems in the league. The Chiefs’ secondary will have its hands full against them, but K.C. does rank fourth in pass defense this season, allowing just 174 yards per game.
