It's no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs have to find a way to contain Philadelphia Eagles' star running back Saquon Barkley if they're going to have a chance to win Super Bowl LIX.
Barkley led the NFL in rushing during the regular season with a whopping 2,005 yards. He hasn't slowed down in the playoffs, rushing for 442 yards throughout three games so far. He is just the second player in league history to rush for over 400 yards and five touchdowns during the postseason in league history.
However, Barkley acknowledged that the Chiefs' defense may be his toughest challenge to date while speaking during Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday,
"Right now we're watching film on them and trying to get an understanding of how they're going to attack you in their scheme," Barkley said about Kansas City's defense. "Which is super hard. They're a great defense. It's not a mistake that they're in this game. I don't think they've allowed a 100-yard rusher all year, besides Lamar (Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.) So, we know it's going to be a tough challenge, but it's a challenge that we're ready to go against."
Barkley went on to specifically praise Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, who he said is arguably the best defensive player in the league.
"I don't know if I've ever actually met Chris Jones, but he's a fantastic player," Barkley said. "One of the best defensive players in the league, you can make an argument is the best defensive player in the league. Definitely a guy that we got to key on, and don't let him wreck the game."
Barkley has faced all of the top defenders in the NFL during his seven-year career, so that's quite the compliment that he paid Jones. The Chiefs have never faced Barkley, as the only opportunity they've had to do so was back in 2021 during a Week 8 regular season matchup against the New York Giants.
K.C. won that game 20-17, and Barkley missed that game an ankle injury. As Barkley mentioned, only Lamar Jackson reached the 100-yard rushing mark against the Chiefs this season, with no RBs able to do so. Something will have to give on Sunday as Barkley has ran for at least 100 yards in nine of his last 10 games.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell strongly denies ‘ridiculous theory’ that league officiating favors the Kansas City Chiefs
Commissioner Roger Goodell likened the conspiracy theory to the NFL’s season being “scripted.”
