The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be interested in a rising wide receiver prospect in the 2024 NFL draft. According to the man himself, the Chiefs hosted South Carolina WR Xavier Legette on a top-30 visit leading up to the draft.

The State Newspaper's Chapel Fowler spoke to Legette at the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame in Greenville, South Carolina. Legette recently accepted the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame's College Player of the Year Award. Fowler asked Legette what he thinks of Kansas City as a potential landing spot for him in the 2024 NFL draft.

"It'd be a great opportunity," Legette said. "Just to play with Patrick Mahomes, it'd be a great opportunity."

In addition to his pre-draft visit with Kansas City, Legette says he spoke with the team at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in early March.

"Yes sir, I did a top-30 visit and I met with them at the combine as well," Legette said.

Everyone knows that the Chiefs have a major need at the wide receiver position after the 2023 NFL season. They've done a ton of work on the position group ahead of the draft, with practically a dozen reported pre-draft visits and interviews at the NFL Combine for various wide receivers. Legette is one of the few to have taken both a pre-draft visit and a meeting at the combine.

How does Xavier Legette fit with the Chiefs?

Legette was a bit of a one-year wonder at South Carolina, with 71 catches for 1,255 receiving yards with seven touchdowns. In his previous four seasons combined, Legette posted just 42 receptions for 423 yards and four touchdowns. At just under 6-foot-1 and 221 pounds, he ran a 4.39s 40-yard dash, jumping a 40-inch vertical and a 126-inch broad jump at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

The 23-year-old is often compared to former Ole Miss WR DK Metcalf, who had an underdeveloped route tree coming out of college. It's one of the reasons the Chiefs ended up passing on Metcalf (which Brett Veach now regrets). Legette is more developed in that regard.

Over 22% of his routes ran in 2023 were go routes, over 15% were post routes, and over 10% were hitch routes, according to Sumer Sports. He didn't run many slants, screens, in, or out-breaking routes at South Carolina. He does a great job of attacking the football and his YAC ability is exciting given his size. He can certainly create separation, which is something the Chiefs desperately need from their wide receiver group moving forward.

What is Xavier Legette's draft stock looking like ahead of the 2024 NFL draft?

Legette also recently spoke with USA TODAY's John Crumpler, where he revealed a bit of information about his draft stock leading up to the first round on Thursday. He's getting a lot of different information from teams about where he could be selected. It wouldn't be shocking for him to find his new team within the first 50 picks of the 2024 NFL draft.

"My name just keeps continuing to buzz," Legette said. "Really, I don't know how this draft is going to go. They had me going late first round. Now, they're telling me I could be going 15 through 32 or even during the second round. It's up in the air now."

The Chiefs pick at No. 32 in Round 1, and that pick could be their only chance to select Legette. He indicated to Crumpler that the Carolina Panthers have told him they'll select him with pick No. 33 in the second round should he be available at that slot.
