Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach could get an opportunity to rectify one of his biggest NFL draft mistakes, at least that's what the latest betting odds suggest.
The Cincinnati Bengals just handed out a massive contract extension to star QB Joe Burrow, but will they be able to keep both of their star receivers? Ja'Marr Chase is likely to be a priority, but the latest news on Tee Higgins suggests that negotiations didn't go too well.
ESPN's Dan Graziano suggested a week ago that the wide receiver market was going to put the kibosh on a deal getting done soon. The Athletic reported days ago that Higgins won't negotiate during the season, and he's expected to hit free agency in 2024 as a result.
According to the folks at Betonline.ag, if Higgins doesn't return to the Bengals, the Chiefs have the best odds to land him at 3/1. They're followed closely by the Buffalo Bills (4/1) and the New England Patriots (5/1).
Veach had a chance to draft Higgins out of Clemson back in the 2020 NFL draft, but the team passed over him for RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who hasn't exactly lived up to his first-round billing. Higgins was selected by the Bengals just one pick later, and he has back-to-back seasons with 74 receptions for over 1,000 yards. He's never had fewer than 60 receptions, 900 yards, and six touchdown receptions in a single season since entering the league.
It's a tough pill to swallow when you consider how the RB position is valued, and the fact that the Chiefs have struggled to find consistency at the wide receiver position in that time frame. In 2021, it was Tyreek Hill or bust. Last year, they patched the room together with veterans. This year, they're putting a lot on some young players, and the verdict is still out on that group.
Only time will tell how things end up with Higgins, and how much he'll demand on the open market. While everything suggests the Chiefs want to go young and cheap at the position, Kansas City certainly wouldn't mind hurting an AFC rival to go along with finding a long-term solution at the receiver position in the process.
