The Kansas City Chiefs missed a key opportunity to put points on the board at the end of the second half of their AFC Championship Game loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With the ball deep in Cincy territory, the Chiefs tried to squeeze an extra play in at the end of the half to try to score a touchdown (instead of settling for the field goal).
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Kansas City wide receiver Tyreek Hill was tackled in bounds and time expired.
Kansas City went into halftime with an 11 point lead instead of a 14 point lead.
After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid took the blame for the play.
"I was hoping we could get the ball in the end zone. I probably gave him the wrong play, first of all," said Reid after the loss. "To start with, I could have given him something better than that where the play was open in the end zone, and then we wouldn't have had to go through that. I'll take responsibility for that one."
It appears that Reid was protecting Mahomes with that statement.
A mic'd up clip of Mahomes shows him telling Reid "one more play, I got it".
You can't blame Mahomes for wanting the ball there — any quarterback would.
But that's where Reid needs to step in and make the right call for the team.
