The Kansas City Chiefs recently signed defensive tackle Danny Shelton.

Shelton was drafted to the Cleveland Browns and played three seasons there. He then played two seasons in New England for the Patriots, then one with the Lions, and last year with the New York Giants.

Shelton hasn’t done much in his seven NFL seasons. You look at his stats and they really aren’t great to be honest. But there has always been one thing that allowed him to continue to play so much.

At first, the move didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Then, I thought about it a little more, and how this signing affected the defense as a whole, and it hit me.

Chiefs signed Shelton for one reason and one reason only

The Chiefs have one of the best defensive tackles in the league in Chris Jones. If you ask me, he is second in the league, right behind Aaron Donald who has a case for the greatest ever at his position.

Jones may not have the stats that you would expect, but there is a very good reason for that.

Almost every game Jones is being doubled teamed, and or game planned against. Other teams offensive lines game plan around stopping Jones, because that’s how dominant he can be.

The addition of Shelton is only going to help him.

Shelton is a very massive man. If you haven’t seen him yet, just go look on Chiefs Twitter. That is all everyone is talking about really. Shelton is 6’2” 345 pounds, and he looks every bit of it.

His size alone will cause for more attention on the defensive lines by offensive lineman. Him and Jones next to each other will look huge.

The Chiefs are hoping that Sheltons’ size will be a big factor on the field, keeping double teams off of Chris Jones. Basically, Shelton is on the roster to help open up more 1-on-1 opportunities for the Pro Bowler.

Sheltons’ size can also help in the run defense department, another area the Chiefs need help in.

Let’s hope this works. We need the captain of sack nation getting as many sacks as possible. The Chiefs will need a dominant pass rush this year if they want to compete within the division.
