Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce can claim a piece of franchise history all for himself in Week 13 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Kelce is currently tied with Pro Football Hall of Fame TE Tony Gonzalez at 76 touchdowns, the most in Chiefs franchise history. With one touchdown against the Raiders in Week 13, Kelce will hold the record all on his own.
Ahead of the Week 13 game, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes spoke to Taylor Rooks and commented on the piece of hi story that his teammate could claim.
"I know Trav (Travis Kelce) has so much appreciation for him (Tony Gonzalez) and everything he's done for this organization," Mahomes said. "Maybe he can dunk it and not get fined."
Mahomes, of course, is talking about the iconic crossbar dunk celebration that Gonzalez popularized during his time in the league. Gonzalez is also part of the Amazon Prime Video NFL analyst crew, so he was asked to weigh in on Kelce potentially breaking the record with him in attendance.
"I don't want him to break it. Come on," Gonzalez joked. "I am so happy for him. He's one of the best tight ends to ever do it. On and off the field, I've been watching him grow. I've been following him since he was a rookie. And I'm not surprised by it. He's one of the greatest tight ends of all time. To have myself, then to have Travis to come and take that torch. A lot of history is going to be broken out on this field today."
As for the the signature dunk celebration from Gonzalez, players are no longer permitted to do the celebration. Kelce hasn't attempted it since 2020 in Week 8 against the New York Jets, when he was previously fined by league.
Gonzalez vowed to pick up the tab if Kelce gave him that shout-out after he breaks the record.
"If he dunks it, I will pay that fine," Gonzalez said.
That's an offer that's got to be hard to refuse if you're Kelce.
