The Kansas City Chiefs’ injury report got a little longer on Day 13 of training camp.

In addition to wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee), linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), and TE Jake Briningstool (hamstring) — WR Rashee Rice (groin) and LB Cam Jones (unknown) also sat out during Wednesday’s practice.

Inclement weather forced the team to move indoors halfway though, which is closed to the public. However, we still drummed up a couple of takeaways.

A silver lining for Rashee Rice’s injury

Rice being held out of practice with an injury can cause instant concern, but our friend Pete Sweeney added some comforting context.

The fact that Rice was on the field doing some light work is positive. We’ll see if he returns for tomorrow’s practice, but it’s possible the Chiefs hold him out in an overabundance of caution even if they feel he’s able to go. Rice could also miss Saturday’s preseason game, but that wouldn’t be a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. With Hollywood Brown also out, there will be plenty of opportunities for young WRs to show what they can do.

Brashard Smith puts his speed on display

Smith is one of the most hyped rookies on the Chiefs roster due to his speed and versatility as a RB and WR. Before the players moved indoors, Smith blew by linebacker Jack Cochrane and caught a deep pass down the sidelines from quarterback Patrick Mahomes (H/T Christian Ainsworth).

The Chiefs have utilized Smith as a WR with the first-team offense all throughout camp. That seems to be how he’ll make the most impact as a rookie, especially with Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, and Elijah Mitchell all ahead of him in the pecking order at RB. The possibilities are endless with Smith’s game-changing speed and receiving abilities in coach Andy Reid’s offense.
