‘You’ll see it in preseason games’ – Travis Kelce is impressed by what he’s seem from explosive rookie during training camp
Kelce knows talent when he sees it.
Now entering his 13th NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has seen a lot of football.
He has played with many highly talented players, particularly on offense. One guy he is excited about this year is rookie running Brashard Smith. Following Day 13 of training camp practice on Wednesday, Kelce had high praise for the Chiefs’ 2025 seventh-round draft pick.
“Yeah, he had a bunch (of big plays) today,” Kelce said. “Man, the guy has all the athletic talent. We love what we’ve seen so far in terms of his growth every single day. We’re throwing a lot at him. There’s a lot you got to do in the in the running back room. I think he’s going to keep getting better and better as these weeks go on, and you’ll see it in preseason games.”
Among the big plays Smith made on Wednesday was this deep catch down the sidelines from quarterback Patrick Mahomes (H/T Christian Ainsworth).
When Smith transferred from Miami to SMU as a senior in college, he switched from wide receiver to running back. He is still growing as a rusher, but should be able to contribute as a receiving back in K.C.’s offense right off the bat. Smith could also be utilized as a gadget player with his high-end 4.3 40-yard dash speed.
With Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, and Elijah Mitchell all ahead of Smith in the RB pecking order, Smith will likely be a situational player as a rookie, specifically in the redzone. However, if he consistently makes plays, he could quickly climb up the depth chart. Pacheco, Hunt, and Mitchell are all only under contract with the Chiefs for the 2025 season, so Smith has the opportunity to show he can be the future of the franchise at the RB position.
