Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is back after missing Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season with a knee injury.
Kelce spoke about his return to action in Week 2 on the latest episode of "New Heights" alongside his brother Jason Kelce. He downplayed his injury and explained that there was no doubt in his mind that he was playing after missing the first week of the season.
One of the more interesting topics of discussion was the Chiefs' defense and their performance through two weeks of play.
“Everybody is dialed in, man,” Travis said. “A lot of guys are returning. We didn’t lose many guys. Obviously, we lost Juan Thornhill, Frank Clark, two key pieces, but at the same time we’ve got a lot of young guys who love the game, who love going out there and making plays. I think our secondary is outstanding. I think our linebackers right now are flying around, getting to the football and just causing havoc. And our D-Line is playing outstanding, getting to the QB and stopping the run right now.”
On the offensive side of the ball, things haven't been quite as pretty for the Chiefs.
While Travis said everyone was syncing up on the defensive side of the ball, he was extremely critical of the team's play and performance on offense.
“We need to start putting up f’ing points as an offense,” Travis said. “We’ve got way too much firepower. We’ve got the best quarterback in the league. We’ve got the best offensive mind (Andy Reid) in the league. It’s just, that’s on us to get things going. I think everybody in the building knows that we can’t hurt ourselves like we’ve been doing. Just penalty on top of penalty and playing behind the sticks. I think we had over five second-and-20s. It’s just stuff where we’re kicking ourselves.”
Travis admitted that he was part of the problem when it came to getting behind the sticks this past week. He clashed with Jaguars S Rayshawn Jenkins and LB Foye Oluokun throughout the game with a pair of penalties that hurt the team.
“I can’t do what I’ve been doing getting frustrated with what’s going on out there and getting personal foul penalties or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties,” Travis said. “I’ve got to get my anger under control.”
At the end of the day, Kelce knows that he can be better and that the offense can be better. It's just a matter of getting out of their own way and executing on offense.
