Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu signed a free agent deal this week with the New Orleans Saints.
Mathieu, a former LSU standout, is from New Orleans.
During Mathieu's introductory press conference he said something that might not make Chiefs fans very happy.
The three-time Pro-Bowl safety told reporters that "from the get go" he knew he wanted to be in New Orleans. Mathieu also said he had been "manifesting" signing with the Saints "for a while".
A couple of weeks ago, Mathieu said he would've re-signed with the Chiefs for the same deal the team gave Justin Reid this offseason (Mathieu's replacement in KC).
Mathieu seemed to indicate to the Kansas City Star last month that the Chiefs never reached out to try to bring him back. I have my doubts as to whether or not that's true after hearing Mathieu's comments this week.
It's clear after hearing Mathieu speak in New Orleans that he never intended to re-sign with the Chiefs. He had his eye on the Saints before he was even a free agent. Mathieu, though, still had the nerve to try to convince KC fans that he wasn't back with the Chiefs because he wasn't wanted in Kansas City. The truth is that Mathieu didn't want to wear a Chiefs uniform again.
I can understand Mathieu wanting to return to Louisiana to play for his hometown team, but I can't understand why he felt the need to mislead Kansas City fans. It's a major insult to the city that embraced him for the last three years.
