One of the more underrated starters the Kansas City Chiefs have on defense is linebacker Leo Chenal.
The former 2022 third-round draft pick is entering his fourth NFL season, which is also the last of his rookie contract. That gives him all the reason in the world to make 2025 his best year yet.
Chenal's versatility has been extremely valuable to the Chiefs. While speaking to the media after Day 3 of training camp practice on Thursday, Chenal discussed the pride he takes of playing not only linebacker on defense, but being a core piece of the special teams unit.
"It's huge," Chenal said. "I'm not an every-down linebacker for the most part. I got a certain percentage of snaps, and I'm obviously looking to extend that. But, when I'm playing, I want to be the best of what I can be. Whether it's punt, kick-off returns, Sam linebacker, filling in for Buck (linebacker). Whatever it is, we got a good core unit of guys that have been on special teams that are leaders, and we're looking to be better and better. And obviously we got (special teams) coach (Dave) Toub, who's a legend. So, just continuing to climb that mountain."
Last season Chenal saved the Chiefs from a likely defeat in a Week 10 matchup against the Denver Broncos, blocking a game-winning field goal attempt as time expired. Overall he played 68 percent of K.C.'s special teams snaps, and 41 percent of the defensive snaps.
That versatility could factor into the Chiefs giving Chenal a second contract. Dave Toub definitely has influence over the roster when it comes to his top players on his special teams unit. Chenal is also an impact linebacker, recording 160 total tackles, five sacks, three forced fumbles, and four passes defensed in 32 career starts.
