The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, bringing the 2025 NFL season to its close. That means the road to the 2026 NFL season begins now for the Kansas City Chiefs, who will look to put a disappointing 6-11 season behind them with a goal of returning to their championship ways. The 2026 NFL offseason will either set the Chiefs up for a comeback or more disappointment.

With nearly 30 players slated for free agency on March 11 and the worst salary cap situation in the league, building a championship-caliber roster won’t be an easy task. As of Monday, Feb. 9, Brett Veach already has a pretty solid start on building out the team’s 90-man offseason roster.

The Chiefs have 54 players under contract for the 2026 NFL offseason

This is the earliest iteration of the offseason roster, which will undergo plenty of changes through free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft. Some of these players listed signed reserve/future contracts with the team and won’t officially be on the roster until the new league year begins. Others will be cut from the 90-man offseason roster to create cap space as the team seeks to get under the 2026 salary cap.

Among the issues you might notice? The Chiefs do not have a punter or a long snapper under contract for the 2026 NFL season. Matt Araiza will likely be tendered a contract. The same might not be true about James Winchester, who could realistically seek to retire in 2026. Kansas City is also quite light in a few position groups, the most notable being the running back spot. They’ve got some work to do there with Smith (a seventh-round pick in 2025) and Powell (an undrafted free agent who didn’t play in 2026) as the only two players under contract.
