The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly on the verge of trading star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to either the Miami Dolphins or the New York Jets.

(Quick side note: Imagine going from Patrick Mahomes to Tua Tagovailoa or Zach Wilson. Yuck.)

The Chiefs were set to begin extension talks soon with Hill, who is under contract with KC through the end of the 2022 season.

I'm guessing that Davante Adams' recent mega-deal with the Las Vegas Raiders has raised Hill's value to a price point that Kansas City isn't comfortable with. So they're trying to move on now before this situation gets ugly.

If that's the move, then I think the Chiefs' next move should be very obvious.

If the Chiefs get the Dolphins' first-round pick (No. 29 overall), then I think Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave has to be the pick. Olave has elite speed and he's been going around this area of the draft in several mock drafts. You obviously can't replace Hill's speed with just anyone, but Olave would be as good as you can hope for at the end of the first round.

Now, if the trade ends up being with the Jets, the Chiefs would have to hope to get New York's No. 10 overall pick. If that's the case, then I think Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson should be the pick. Wilson also has elite speed and he's a more complete wide receiver than Olave. Wilson can play inside or outside, and he's extremely dangerous after the catch. His route-running needs some work, but he has the raw skills to be an elite-level wide receiver in the NFL. And playing with Mahomes could certainly help him get to that level.

Update: Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins for five draft picks, including the No. 29 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Trading Hill is not something I expected the Chiefs to do this offseason, but it would free up a lot of salary cap space for future seasons.
