Los Angeles Chargers make one of the smartest moves they could have made with what's left in free agency

Free agency has been going on for almost three weeks now, so there really isn't much left. But, what the Los Angeles Chargers just did is something that's very smart, because of what's left out there, and because of what they need.
This team is not very far away from being a Super Bowl-competing team. They made the playoffs last year, and while they did lose to the Houston Texans, it was a good place to start in Harbaugh's first season.
So, this free agency period has been one that's important. Luckily, they have just brought some continuity back.
Chargers bring back safety Tony Jefferson
According to Jordan Schultz, the Chargers are bringing back safety Tony Jefferson to a one-year deal.
Tony Jefferson has had a solid NFL career as a safety. He went undrafted in 2013 after playing college football at Oklahoma. Despite not being picked, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals and quickly made an impact. He started as a backup but earned a bigger role, and in 2016, he had a standout year with 96 tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.
In 2017, Jefferson joined the Baltimore Ravens with a four-year, $34 million deal. He started strong, racking up 145 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception over his first two seasons. But a torn ACL in 2019 cut his time with the Ravens short, and after missing the 2020 season, he bounced around—playing briefly for the San Francisco 49ers, returning to Baltimore in 2021, and then joining the New York Giants in 2022, where he made 23 tackles in nine games.
He retired in May 2023 to work in the Ravens’ scouting department but came back to the NFL in 2024, where he signed with the Chargers and head coach Jim Harbaugh.
He impressed in the preseason with 14 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack against the Cowboys, securing his spot on the team. Then last year he played a valuable role as a depth safety, and even played in eight games and started in four. He's coming back to do the same thing, which is valuable for a team that has struggled with injuries so much over the last few years.
