Pro Football Focus rightfully gives the Los Angeles Chargers a middling grade for how they've handled the offseason
While the Los Angeles Chargers could still make some additions, the majority of their roster is set for the 2025 season. While the Los Angeles Chargers could still make some additions, the majority of their roster is set for the 2025 season.
Some of the top free agents they've signed include tight end Tyler Conklin, guard Mekhi Becton, cornerback Donte Jackson, and running back Najee Harris. Los Angeles also bolstered its roster in the 2025 NFL Draft with players such as RB Omarion Hampton, wide receiver Tre Harris, and defensive lineman Jamaree Caldwell.
Perhaps most importantly of all, L.A. re-signed linebacker Khalil Mack to a one-year, fully guaranteed $18 million contract. Despite these moves, the folks over at Pro Football Focus feel as though the Chargers should have done more given the amount of salary cap space they had to work with. As a result, PFF slapped them with a C+ offseason grade.
From PFF: "The Chargers' offseason grade might seem harsh, but they should have really stepped on the gas in their winning window. They were very quiet for a team with a lot of cap space, outside of signing Mekhi Becton late in free agency's opening window. Although the Najee Harris signing looked good at the time, it feels a bit redundant after the team drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round. Losing Poona Ford is also a tough look after he was the third-highest graded player (85.3) on Los Angeles' defense, after Khalil Mack and Tony Jefferson, last season. He ranked in the top five on the team in PFF pass-rush and run-defense grades. The Chargers will still be a good football team (even a playoff team), but I expected more improvements."
It's hard to disagree with PFF here. They are correct about the Chargers' winning window being wide open right now, and they should be doing everything they can to go all-in on a Super Bowl run. It is very rare to have the amount of cap space that L.A. had after already giving its quarterback a major contract.
The Chargers are still a bit thin in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They could have also done much better at the WR position during free agency than bringing back 30-year-old Mike Williams, who has been on a downward trend over the past few years. L.A. still has a solid roster overall and could once again make the playoffs, but it's hard to group them with the elite teams of the AFC.
NFL’s future announcement will make Chargers’ game in Brazil this season unlike one we’ve ever watched before
The Los Angeles Chargers are kicking off plenty of offseason activities in the coming weeks, and the NFL season will be here before we know it. For the entire league, they are patiently waiting to know in what order they'll face their 2025-2026 opponents during the regular season. The first game for Jim Harbaugh's Chargers […]
