We know the Minnesota Vikings are looking for a quarterback to, at minimum, compete with J.J. McCarthy.

“I absolutely want a competitive situation,” said head coach Kevin O’Connell during his season-ending press conference. “Obviously, J.J. [McCarthy] is going to be a major, major emphasis for our staff and our team and me personally, and we’ll figure out what that looks like as we navigate the early part of this offseason when it comes to managing the roster.

“I think ultimately, we’ve got to decide how to not only continue J.J.’s progression, allow him to continue to ascend as a young player, 22-years-old with 10 starts, but at the same time, like I said, I think the competition in that room will only enhance our entire team.”

David Carr hints at brother Derek’s return to NFL with Minnesota Vikings

There have been a lot of intriguing options thrown about for the Vikings. Hall of Fame edge rusher Jared Allen threw out the idea of both Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins and Mac Jones of the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week, and they are just two of many different options they have at their disposal.

Over the weekend, we learned that former New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is looking to come out of retirement. He not only confirmed that, but also that he said no last year.

“Would I come back? The answer, obviously, is yes,” said Derek Carr. “But I have had to say no a couple of times so far.”

Right after that, his brother David dropped quite an interesting nugget.

“Got any purple and gold?”

Derek played it off like it was Los Angeles Lakers season, but it’s clear what David was getting at: he was hinting that the Vikings were a team calling last year.

Considering where they were at when they likely would have started calling, it makes sense why Carr said no. He has two criteria, for coming back, and they didn’t meet at least half of it.

“So would I do it? Absolutely, I would do it. I told you two things: I’d have to be healthy and I got it. I would want a chance to win a Super Bowl. Obviously, that’s a tough thing to find. That’s hard to do,” said Derek Carr.

The way the Vikings are positioned, they do have a chance to make a run and win a Super Bowl, but there is still work to be done, with the majority of it at the quarterback position. They need better play in order to do anything next season.

If Carr comes to Minnesota, will they get that from him? I have my doubts, but it’s an interesting idea.
