New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart had a rough performance in his second NFL start. In New York’s 26-14 loss to the New Orleans Saints, Dart finished with 202 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and a fumble.

Dart’s turnovers in the loss were a leading cause of his team only scoring 14 points, as multiple drives were derailed. After the performance, Dart was self-critical when reflecting on how he played. And he’s not leaning on any excuse about him being a rookie.

“Right now, I’m one of the youngest quarterbacks in the league,” Dart told reporters. “But I could give two craps about that. It’s about winning. So, I don’t take any excuse for age or being a rookie. There’s a responsibility when you’re a quarterback to go win games, and that’s just the standard I hold myself to.”

Mistakes are expected for any rookie quarterback when they’re making their first starts in the NFL. Giants fans were excited after his efficient performance against the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Now, reality has set in that the 2025 season will be incredibly up and down.

The volatility of the games this season is identical to the volatility of Dart’s play. In the first half, the Giants marched the ball down the field with multiple impactful completions to tight end Theo Johnson. However, after fumbles from Cam Skattebo, Darius Slayton, and Dart, the momentum the offense had was entirely derailed.

Dart wasn’t the only player to have errors in this game. However, because he’s the team’s starting quarterback, he is taking responsibility for the team’s issues.

“I’m the leader of the offense,” Dart told the media. “So I think that any time that those things happen, kind of falls back on the leaders. And, I take that responsibility … we’re gonna clean that stuff up.”

The Giants absolutely need to clean up their turnovers, as the five they had were inexcusable. Dart’s two interceptions came when the game was nearly out of reach, but they were still head-scratching decisions. With a range of positive and negative plays in the game, Dart doesn’t want to take credit for the early game highlights.

“I’m definitely not into like moral victories or things like that,” stated Dart. “It’s a loss. I don’t really care what happened during the game.”

The moral victories he’s referring to were the drives in which the offense showed signs of consistency. Dart acknowledged the team did a lot right, but the turnovers were the killer.

“I feel like the whole game we moved the ball just fine. We just had turnovers,” Dart said to reporters. “There weren’t many times where we just got stopped on a three-and-out. I thought we were really good in the open field. We just turned the ball over.”

The offense’s performance was frustrating to watch, knowing it showed flashes of its potential. The turnovers will need to be corrected quickly, as the team faces a matchup against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles this Thursday.
