The best way the Titans can cash in on the Brian Daboll bet in this brutal modern NFL reality
This reality in the modern NFL makes a common talking point somewhat irrelevant.
New head coach Robert Saleh landed a massive addition to his coaching staff last week, when former Giants HC Brian Daboll signed on as the new OC of the Tennessee Titans.
The organization is thrilled with this new duo, who will oversee each side of the ball starting in 2026. Daboll’s experience and past success is a big reason why fans are bought in. He was highly sought after in this crazy coaching cycle, so it’s really exciting that Tennessee landed who seems to have been their top target.
But this is a double edged sword: landing such a high-caliber OC has everybody immediately wondering how long Tennessee will be able to keep him around. Will Cam Ward be working with a third coordinator within three or four seasons?
My two cents is simple: Titans fans should be rooting for Daboll to get hired away in a year or two.
It’s fine that Brian Daboll probably won’t last in Tennessee
This year’s NFL head coach carousel has been insane. Ten teams will have a brand new leader and staff in place soon. We saw some huge names change offices. But buried underneath the head coach chaos is an even more chaotic offensive coordinator situation. As of the writing of this article, at least 18 OC positions will be filled by somebody different in 2026. That’s more than half the league!
This number still has the potential to creep into the 20’s. There’s a larger discussion to be had about our microwave society putting too much blame on these coaches and the potential futility of everybody swapping hats and polos every season, but this is the reality we live in.
When you look at the list of offensive coordinators around the league right now, nobody has been with their team for longer than since 2022. And no play-calling offensive coordinator has been with their team for longer than since 2025. Last year!
There are five OC’s with longer tenures than one season:
- Packers OC Adam Stenavich (2022)
- Vikings OC Wes Phillips (2022)
- Colts OC Jim Bob Cooter (2023)
- Bengals OC Dan Pitcher (2024)
- Panthers OC Brad Idzik (2024)
All of them are behind play-calling head coaches.
I don’t think the OC position in the modern NFL is one that anybody holds onto for more than a year or two. The current situation and recent history bears that out. It’s a slippery rung of the career ladder.
You’re either going to do well enough to get a head coaching opportunity and move up, or you’re going to fall back down to an assistant spot because it doesn’t go well. I think these are the two options for Daboll in Tennessee. I don’t think there is a third option. So there’s no reason not to root for the outcome that involves him crushing it while he’s here.
