The Commanders have shown one prospect a lot of interest, and it’s just adding fuel to the fire of drafting him No. 7 overall.

The Washington Commanders are preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, and they’re less than a month away from being on the clock with the No. 7 overall pick.

The front office and coaching staff have been meeting with top prospects to really get to know them and their fit with the team, including bringing them to the facilities for a top-30 visit. The Commanders’ latest top-30 visit just added more fuel to the fire regarding how much they like one prospect with the No. 7 overall pick.

The Commanders are hosting WR Carnell Tate on a top-30 visit

The Commanders have already been linked to players like RB Jeremiyah Love with the no. 7 overall pick, but the tide could be turning after Ohio State WR Carnell Tate said that he has a top-30 visit with the Commanders coming up.

The Commanders have been aggressive in trying to land a top WR this offseason, but haven’t been able to. That alone shows how much they want to add a premier WR on offense for 2026 and well beyond, which is why I believe Tate is their top choice as of now. They also had a long talk with Tate at his Pro Day, and now he’s coming to Ashburn, which shouldn’t be taken lightly.

General manager Adam Peters has a history of drafting players they bring in for a top-30 visit, and Tate should be their pick if he falls to them at No. 7 overall.

The Commanders need Carnell Tate

There’s still a good chance the Commanders add WR Brandon Aiyuk at some point in the offseason, but they need more at the WR position, especially when it comes to the future. 2026 could likely be Terry McLaurin’s final season in Washington, with a massive salary cap space hit in 2027, and Tate could be his replacement.

People are calling Tate a high-end WR2, but Tate can become a top WR1 in the NFL as he enters his prime. Tate is an early-declare and an early-breakout WR, as he just turned 21 last month, which is exactly what you want from a prospect. He’s a crisp route runner at 6-3, 195 pounds, and he’s not just a vertical threat as many suggest.

The Commanders won’t overthink Tate as an alpha WR, and you shouldn’t either. They clearly have a lot of interest in him, and he’s my pick for the Commanders if the NFL Draft were today. Tate said at the NFL Scouting Combine that he’s had great conversations with the Commanders, and now he’s coming to the facilities to get a look at his potential new home.
