Chiefs DT Chris Jones had an important announcement to make during his speech at the Super Bowl LVIII rally in downtown Kansas City on Wednesday.
The pending free agent defensive tackle reiterated what we've known for a very long time — he wants to remain in Kansas City for the entirety of his NFL career. During his speech at the Super Bowl rally, Jones revealed that he intends to stay in Kansas City.
"I need three of those things, baby," Jones shouted to the crowd. "We ain't done yet! Kansas City! We will be back here next year! And for those who want Chris Jones gone, I ain't going nowhere, baby! Woo! I want to be here this year, next year, and the year after."
"Three-peat, three-peat, three-peat," Jones chanted.
This announcement from Jones was much to the dismay of Jones' agent, Michael J. Katz, who will once again be negotiating a contract extension.
Last season, things did not go as planned for the Katz Brothers or Jones, as a long-term contract extension was not reached. Instead, they agreed to a reworked contract with several contract incentives, which Jones achieved throughout the 2023 NFL season and postseason.
Will the two sides agree on a contract extension? The truth of the matter is that Jones' words don't give the Chiefs as much leverage as you might think. According to CBS Sports contract expert Joel Corry, Jones' contract incentives were structured in the form of an option bonus. If the Chiefs want to keep Jones in 2024 and don't want an additional $4.25M cap charge, they'll need to agree to a contract extension before Wednesday, Feb. 21.
That means we could well know Jones' fate and future in Kansas City before March even arrives.
