The Kansas City Chiefs welcomed back DT Chris Jones and TE Travis Kelce to practice on Wednesday, with Jones returning from his contract-related holdout and Kelce returning from a knee injury.
KSHB-TV's Aaron Ladd caught the two horsing around in practice to kick off the practice week. It was a welcomed sight after both players were sorely missed in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
Both Kelce and Jones are expected to continue to practice on Thursday after limited practices on Wednesday.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo said that Jones looked good in his first practice back with the team.
"Yeah, we'll get through (Thursday) and (Friday) and see where he is," Spagnuolo said. "I'll be curious to talk with him and see how he feels conditioning-wise. That's the biggest thing, right? The one thing we don't want to do is put him in a situation where we get him hurt. We certainly don't want that. We all know he hasn't had a lot of work up until this point. We'll get him as much as we can and try to be smart on gameday."
As for what a reasonable snap count might look like for Jones, Spagnuolo declined to put a number on it. He knows that Jones keeps himself in pretty good shape and could rise to the occasion to play more if necessary.
"I don't want to put a number on it, I really don't," Spagnuolo said. "One year, I forget where I was, we had a linebacker that didn't play very much. It was like, 'Hey we're going to keep you at 25-30 snaps.' He played 60 snaps. I can't remember why, maybe someone got hurt. I'm not going to slap a number on it."
As for Kelce, he continues to work his way back from a bone bruise caused by a hyperextension in practice last week. Chiefs OC Matt Nagy wasn't willing to confirm whether Kelce would be available to play in Week 2. His estimation after practice on Wednesday is that Kelce looked good, but that won't stop the coaching staff from preparing for all possibilities.
"Again, that's a Coach (Andy) Reid, Brett Veach (question)," Nagy said. "I thought (Travis Kelce) looked good yesterday in practice, which is great to see. But again all of that is probably hourly, daily, whatever you want to say. We as coaches, offensively, we've just got to be prepared for both sides, just like it was last week."
