The Tennessee Titans are in victory lap mode following the recently-broken news of DeAndre Hopkins signing with the franchise. The All-Pro caliber wide receiver is bound to change how we think of the offense entering the 2023 NFL season.
However, while fans' excitement is through the roof, one has to objectively wonder: How much does the addition of one man and one man only really change the outlook of the team?
Well, according to the data analysis of betting expert Alan Bell, it's a lot. Like a lot. Let's look at the exact numbers.
Bell took to Twitter on Sunday night to share what the numbers looked like from his own 10,000x simulations of the Titans season before and after signing Hopkins. You can see the numbers below (if you hate tables, don't worry, we'll break it down).
Per Bell's simulations, Hopkins will account for 0.4 more wins in 2023. Your initial reaction to that might understandably be: "So basically, nothing?" However, that is a big difference for just one man and it shows in the consequent numbers. That win difference translates to:
- a 4.9% higher chance of winning the AFC South.
- a 6.5% higher chance of making the playoffs.
- a 0.7% higher chance of winning the conference
Those are game-changing numbers right there! All for $13 million per year? What a bargain.
Beyond numbers, it's easy to understand the impact that D-Hop will have on the Titans. Before him, the offense had no one opposing defenses could look at as a legit threat and somebody that really dictated coverages. Hopkins is that guy.
It'll show week in and week out as Ryan Tannehill (or Will Levis eventually?) targets Hopkins at a very high rate. The best news for Titans fans is that we're only about a couple of weeks away from training camp.
