The next potential Dennis Allen reclamation project just became available but it might be one the Bears should avoid
Marshon Lattimore is now officially on the market following his release from the Washington Commanders.
It’s been a busy Monday in the NFL world with multiple trades and releases coming through every hour as teams look to get under the salary cap by the start of the new league year next week.
The Chicago Bears are one of the teams that need to make some moves before being cap compliant but haven’t made any moves, yet. Other teams certainly have been getting busy and the new players hitting the market can reshape the free agent landscape.
The latest NFL news coming out of Washington might spark some interest inside Halas Hall but it’s one that the Bears should look to avoid.
Washington Commanders release CB Marshon Lattimore ahead of free agency
The Commanders made the official decision to release cornerback Marshon Lattimore after playing just nine games last season. The move saves Washington $18.5 million in cap space and puts a 29-year-old, four-time Pro Bowler, on the free agent market available to sign at any time.
Lattimore started his career in New Orleans after being selected 11th overall in 2017. With the Saints, Lattimore played eight seasons in Dennis Allen’s system, who is now the current defensive coordinator with the Bears. Interestingly enough, Lattimore was actually traded from New Orleans to Washington the day after Allen was fired by the Saints.
Marshon Lattimore isn’t a player the Bears should be looking to pursue
With Chicago, Allen has sought to bring in some of his former players and found success with C.J. Gardner-Johnson and D’Marco Jackson. He even kicked the tires on getting Chicago to trade for Alontae Taylor at the deadline. So, it’s worth considering if the Bears made a move here.
The Bears have a sneaky need at the outside cornerback spot with Nahshon Wright headed to free agency and without much confidence in Tyrique Stevenson to step into a starting role. Bringing another cornerback in, either in free agency or in the draft, is certainly a strong possibility.
Lattimore was an incredible player in Allen’s system and brought some fire to the outside cornerback spot. Having two players that can lock up opposing No. 1’s in Jaylon Johnson and Lattimore sounds appealing on paper.
But, the Bears should avoid going after Lattimore. He’s played 10 or fewer games in each of the last four seasons and had a shaky season in 2025 that included being called for nine penalties in nine games. Not to mention he’s coming off a torn ACL and will still have a decent market value.
The Bears are already going to be tight spenders and this isn’t something I’d want to sink my money into. Now when it comes to other former Dennis Allen alumni like Trey Hendrickson, Demario Davis or Cameron Jordan, now those are signings I would consider to add to reunite in Allen’s defense.
