Monday morning is always best served for overreactions on social media and especially on sports talk shows on national television.
And of course the talk of the town this morning was the stunning ending to the Chicago Bears – Washington Commanders matchup that ended with a walk-off 52-yard Hail Mary by Commanders' rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
However, the talk today wasn't about the throw, or the catch, it was about what happened before the throw even happened with Bears' cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.
The Bears' second-year cornerback was seen in the endzone with his back turned to the field mocking Commanders fans as the ball was snapped. The worst part was seeing some Chicago fans in the front row motioning for Stevenson to turn around.
Stevenson eventually realized what was going on a got in position to defend the pass, only because it took Daniels 12 seconds to get the ball off. Stevenson then tipped the ball up in the air, right into the waiting arms of Commanders receiver Noah Brown.
On Monday, Chicago Bears fan and NFL Media personality Kyle Brandt had some choice words to say while on Good Morning Football.
"We let it get away, but we had it, and you feel a little bit dignified about the end and then you see Tyrique Stevenson, and it just really just defiles everything that you stood for in that game," Brandt said. "As he is literally taunting the crowd, my question would be and I have many, Tyrique, what were you saying to the crowd? Were you saying, 'Yeah, I'm the guy that got cooked by [Terry] McLaurin all day. Yeah, I'm the guy who got a personal foul for poking a lineman in the eye.' What were you saying? You didn't have a day. You didn't do anything!"
"I have never seen that in any level of sport," Brandt added. "I've never seen that in a high school football game, where the receivers are running down the field and he has his back turned, talking trash as the game is still going on. It is so bad. It is so bush league. It is so embarrassing. It's just terrible."
Brandt is spot on with everything that he said about the play. Stevenson was clearly in the wrong and even though he didn't speak to reporters after the game, he did post this apology on social media.
The harsh words might be an overreaction
Don't get me wrong, the response was warranted after the game Stevenson had. However, bashing the young player on national TV isn't the best course of action.
Unfortunately, this play and moment is forever going be on Stevenson's shoulders, Brandt adding that it's going to be "a life sentence for him" that will stick around.
You hate to see something like that happen for a young defensive back who fought through fire his rookie season was quickly rising up in this league. Just seven weeks ago, Stevenson was named as the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week, an award he's now won twice in two seasons.
However, your blemishes always stick with you longer than your triumphs. Hopefully Stevenson shrugs the game off and learns from his mistakes in Week 8 going forward.
We will likely hear from Stevenson for the first time since the game and get more thoughts from head coach Matt Eberflus on the play later today.
