NFL teams continue to make the same old mistake, and the Kansas City Chiefs remain beneficiaries.
It's increasingly likely that the Chiefs will be able to keep the top of their coaching staff intact following the 2024 NFL season. The New York Jets (Aaron Glenn), Jacksonville Jaguars (Liam Coen), and Las Vegas Raiders (Pete Carroll) all have new head coaches. Those three teams were the only ones with vacancies to interview Chiefs coordinators Steve Spagnuolo and Matt Nagy.
Only two head-coaching vacancies remain: the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints. Neither Spags nor Nagy seems to be on their radar, but that could always change in the future. Neither team will be allowed to request an interview with Spagnuolo until Jan. 27, the day after conference championship games occur. It's also entirely possible that both teams have already landed on their head coach of the future by then.
Suddenly, it looks like the Chiefs can keep a coaching staff that has won back-to-back Super Bowls together. A team like the Detroit Lions saw their offensive and defensive coaching staff pilfered after two successful seasons, but none resulting in a Super Bowl win. Yet, Spags and Nagy are on the precipice of punching their ticket to Super Bowl LIX, marking a third consecutive appearance and a chance at NFL history.
Timing plays a big role in why the staff will likely stick together another year. The longer you're in the race for a Super Bowl, the fewer opportunities you have to interview. Teams are notoriously impatient regarding head-coaching hires. It's almost as if they're playing a game of musical chairs and don't want to be left without a seat, even if that means passing up on a better seat that could be available later down the line.
It's understandable why Nagy wasn't exactly getting a ton of looks when you consider the dip in offensive performance since he took over as offensive coordinator in 2022. However, Spagnuolo has only ascended to unrivaled ranks as a defensive coordinator in the NFL over the course of the past six seasons in Kansas City. He could one day become the first defensive coordinator elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame based on only his resume as a defensive coordinator. He already has more Super Bowl rings than any other defensive coordinator in NFL history.
The rest of the NFL seems content to allow Spagnuolo's success to continue in Kansas City alongside Andy Reid. Chiefs fans and players alike won't be complaining about that because everyone in the Chiefs Kingdom knows how indispensable Spagnuolo has become.
