The Kansas City Chiefs are celebrating Christmas early.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid hinted that GM Brett Veach would be looking into the veteran offensive tackle market earlier this week. As it turns out, Veach was waiting for the right player to become available before making his move.
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs are signing former Arizona Cardinals OT DJ Humphries, who was cleared medically today to return to the game following an ACL injury on Dec. 31 in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs are giving Humphries a one-year deal worth $2 million with incentives that bring it up to $4.5 million total value. The team had over $5.9 million in available cap space as of this morning according to the NFLPA.
Humphries, 30, is a former first-round draft pick out of the University of Florida. He's played with the Cardinals for his entire NFL career from 2015-2023, earning a Pro Bowl selection during the 2021 NFL season. He's appeared in and started 98 career regular-season games on the offensive line, with the overwhelming majority of his play coming at left tackle. The 6-foot-5 and 307-pound tackle allowed 28 total pressures and four sacks in 568 pass block snaps during the 2023 NFL season.
This move comes after inconsistent play at the left tackle position this season. Kingsley Suamataia was made a healthy scratch last week and Wanya Morris has battled injury all season long. The money suggests that Humphries will likely slot into the starting job after getting up to speed on the playbook and into football shape, which would likely relegate both Morris and Suamataia to backup roles. As things stood last week, LG Joe Thuney was the team's backup at the left tackle position. That will likely be the case again as they travel to face the Carolina Panthers in Week 12.
