Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach might not be finished making roster moves following the trade to acquire WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans.
As first reported by ESPN's Field Yates, the Chiefs have restructured right tackle Jawaan Taylor's contract. They converted a portion of his salary into a signing bonus, creating $5.3 million in usable salary cap space for the 2024 NFL season.
This move guarantees that Taylor will be the Chiefs' right tackle for the 2025 NFL season. It doesn't necessarily mean he's here through the 2026 NFL season, but it's certainly possible he remains in their long-term plans.
The move also suggests that Veach might have something else up his sleeve ahead of the NFL's Nov. 5 trade deadline. . .
What do we know about this salary-cap clearing move?
The Chiefs had $4.3 million in available salary cap space ahead of the DeAndre Hopkins trade. As a condition of the trade, the Titans absorbed roughly $2.5 million of DHop's remaining prorated salary. Right now, the NFLPA's public salary-cap report lists the Chiefs at $3.7M in salary-cap space.
Given Hopkins' transaction has officially been processed on the league personnel notice, this new number should include the Hopkins trade. Taylor's restructured contract might not be reflected in the NFLPA's public salary cap report yet. That'd put the Chiefs at around $9 million in salary cap space. If the Hopkins trade is not in the system yet, Kansas City would be sitting somewhere around $6.5 million in cap space after the Taylor restructure.
They'll undoubtedly need a portion of those salary cap dollars to conduct business (practice squad elevations/signings) for the rest of the 2024 NFL season. However, they won't need all of it, unless they plan to roll some of that money over into 2025 for contract extensions. The move suggests Kansas City might not be finished making trades at the deadline or have a free-agent move in mind for the stretch run.
ESPN's Pat McAfee reported shortly after the Hopkins trade that sources told him Chiefs GM Brett Veach might not be done making moves. . .
Could another move for a wide receiver be in the works? Are they looking to add a young cornerback with 2-3 years left on his contract after Jaylen Watson's injury? Could they look to add some more beef to their defensive line with the injury to Mike Danna? Maybe a reunion with former Chiefs starting left tackle Donovan Smith could be in the works? The possibilities are vast, with many moves that could help make this undefeated team even better for the second half of the 2024 NFL season as they seek a third consecutive Super Bowl title.
