The Kansas City Chiefs have been thin at the wide receiver position for the past several years.

Thankfully, they have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, who’s done the most you could ask for with what he’s had. As the Chiefs kick off the 2025 season, they’re hoping that they have given Mahomes perhaps his deepest WR corps yet.

Unfortunately, the unit is already dealing with obstacles. Rashee Rice is suspended for the first six games, and rookie Jalen Royals will miss Week 1’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers with a knee injury.

However, K.C. was prepared for Rice’s suspension, and Royals’ injury doesn’t appear to be long-term. While speaking to the media on Thursday, coach Andy Reid praised Rice for how he’s carried himself despite knowing he was going to be suspended, and is confident that other Chiefs WRs will step up while he’s out.

“Rashee’s a real positive guy,” Reid said. “Big heart, very positive with everything he does. He was practicing with us up until this past week, and he left with good energy. So he’s away from the team now for a few weeks, and but we’ve got good players at that position that I know will step up and work hard to do a good job in there.”

Chiefs 2025 WR corps could be deepest in recent memory

In replacing Rice and Royals specifically, look for veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster to fill that void. When Royals returns, he and Smith-Schuster should rotate and each make contributions in the short-intermediate passing game.

Then there’s speedsters Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, and Tyquan Thornton. Each are a threat to take the top off the defense at any given moment, and are dangerous with the ball in their hands after the catch. Worthy became very polished at the end of last season, and could establish himself as one of the most complete WRs in the NFL this year.
