Dave Toub throws a bucket of cold water on new Chiefs RB Dameon Pierce’s revenge game chances in Week 14 vs. Texans
It doesn’t sound as if RB Dameon Pierce will make his Kansas City Chiefs debut against his former team in Week 14.
It appears that Kansas City Chiefs fans will be left waiting another week for the debut of new practice squad RB Dameon Pierce.
It’d be a surprise at this point if the Chiefs were to elevate Pierce from the practice squad to face his former team, the Houston Texans, during Week 14 of the 2025 NFL season. Many felt this game would be the natural debut for Pierce in Kansas City, since it’s against his former team. The early impressions from Coach Reid on the newcomer sounded promising just last week.
“Yeah, that’s the main thing right now,” Reid said of Pierce learning the offense. “Just get in and learn what we’re doing, and then we’ll take it from there. He’s been productive. So, you know, good player, Brett’s (Veach) always doing a nice job finding guys and adding them to the roster. And so we’ll just see kind of play by here, see how it goes here.”
What the coaching staff has seemingly learned since those comments is that Pierce is not yet ready to make his Chiefs debut.
Chiefs STC Dave Toub says RB Dameon Pierce still has a ways to go
Asked about Pierce and his potential for contributions in the kick return game in Week 14, Chiefs STC Dave Toub threw a bucket of cold water on the possibility that he could see his debut. While he’d probably be capable of doing some things on special teams, he’s still not quite up to speed on the offensive side of the ball as things stand.
“He’s been hitting some kick returns for us, you know,” Toub said of Pierce. “And he’s just getting his feet wet with everything we’re doing on offense. So, you know, it’ll be a minute before he gets to go. I mean, I’m sure he wants to play badly. I mean, I haven’t talked to him about it, but I can only imagine he wants to play, but it’s just a matter of the offense. Learn the offense, and then, for me, he could probably play and do some things. But, I mean, he’s just not there yet.”
Pierce has only been in Kansas City for a dozen days, so it’s not a huge shock to hear that he’s not ready yet. It also doesn’t mean that he won’t contribute to the Chiefs’ success this week. Expect him to serve some looks to the scout team defense that could be very valuable in this matchup. At the same time, with injuries at offensive tackle and safety, the team might have to exhaust its practice-squad elevations across different positions.
With just five games remaining on the schedule, it does beg the question of whether Pierce will actually see the field for the Chiefs in 2025 or if he’s a long-term project with 2026 in mind. It could ultimately come down to whether the team stays healthy at the return specialist and running back positions.
Chiefs’ remaining 2025 NFL regular-season schedule
- Week 14: Texans
- Week 15: Chargers
- Week 16: @ Titans
- Week 17: Broncos
