Two years ago, Nick Bolton was just a pup, waiting to get unleashed by Steve Spagnuolo, turning him into the dog he is now – the Chiefs' all-time season tackles leader. Now, he is one of the best linebackers in the league, top 10 by many. But two years ago, he wasn't the captain he is today.
That had nothing to do with him, either. At the time, the Chiefs had Tyrann Mathieu, one of the best safeties in the league and maybe the best leader we have seen on the defensive side of the ball for Kansas City in quite some time.
The two played together in 2021, but the Chiefs decided to move on from Mathieu last offseason and brought in Justin Reid. Since then, Bolton has sprouted into something great. On Sunday, for the Chiefs' 2023 first preseason game, they played against each other.
Chiefs' legend and current great link up after game
Mathieu is a legend if you ask me. A Chiefs' legend, of course, that won a Super Bowl with the team while having great seasons defensively and being the leader of the defense. That's legendary. And Bolton, he is amazing and has the potential to be a legend.
After the game that saw the New Orleans Saints win, the two linked up and swapped jerseys. What Mathieu wrote was special.
"Keep leading them boys. It was an honor to play next to you. Keep holding #32 down. More glory."
Shortly after that, Mathieu tweeted out a heartfelt message for Chiefs Kingdom.
"Always love for the kingdom," Mathieu wrote with a red heart emoji.
That was just a cool moment the two shared together.
