The Cleveland Browns are signing quarterback Bailey Zappe off of the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

The Browns needed a quarterback after starter Deshaun Watson suffered a ruptured Achilles during Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Chiefs signed Zappe to their practice squad following preseason roster cuts back in late August. A team can sign any practice squad player from around the NFL as long as they sign him to their active 53-man roster.

Kansas City brought Zappe in after third-year quarterback Chris Oladokun struggled to progress during training camp and preseason. With Zappe now gone, Oladokun returning to the team is definitely on the table. Oladokun is an athletic player with good running ability and was credited with helping the Chiefs prepare for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson for last year's AFC Championship game.

As for Zappe, he could immediately become the No. 2 quarterback behind Jameis Winston for Cleveland with Dorian Thompson-Robinson dealing with a finger injury. Zappe was drafted in the fourth-round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, where he started eight games and threw for 2,053 yards and 11 touchdowns.

A reunion between K.C. and Zappe could happen next year. The Chiefs signed him for a reason and would probably like to see how he develops in their system. Backup QB Carson Wentz is only on a one-year deal, so there will be a need for depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes in 2025.
