The Kansas City Chiefs are giving fans a glimpse at what the future could hold for GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
On Monday, the Chiefs announced they'd hold a press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 28. to present initial renovation concepts for a reimagined Arrowhead Stadium. This decision comes ahead of April's vote in Jackson County, where taxpayers will decide whether to extend the 3/8-cent sales tax for stadium projects involving both the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals have already released renderings of their new stadium, but now the Chiefs can impress the voting public with their plans following back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
Speaking to media members ahead of the AFC Championship Game, Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt reiterated the team's commitment to keeping Arrowhead Stadium the home of the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
“Yeah, nothing’s changed from our perspective," Hunt told reporters on Dec. 31. "We’re still focused on GEHA Field at Arrowhead. We believe it’s one of the best stadiums in the National Football League. We hope to make it our home for at least another 25 years.”
The team's current lease at Arrowhead Stadium does not expire until 2031, so another 25 years would put the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium until at least 2056. The stadium broke ground in 1968 and opened in 1972. Arrowhead Stadium was previously renovated in the mid-to-late 90s, 2007-2010, and it had a wave of updates and renovations in 2020.
Hunt and Chiefs President Mark Donovan will present renderings on Wednesday at 10 a.m. CT and answer questions from media members after the reveal. The franchise already has a separate round of renovations planned to be able to fit the pitch for the six FIFA World Cup matches that Arrowhead Stadium will host in 2026.
