The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver situation was bad entering Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers. It's already worse entering Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided injury updates on Monday afternoon during his media availability. It was no surprise when Reid ruled out CB Jaylen Watson for Week 8 with his ankle injury after reports of a fracture. It was, however, a surprise that WR JuJu Smith-Schuster was ruled out with his hamstring injury.
"I don't have any final injury report for you," Reid said. "I would tell you, (Jaylen) Watson, it's not, it's not going to be good, and he won't be ready this week. JuJu (Smith-Schuster) won't be ready this week. So two different, two different things there."
Smith-Schuster suffered the hamstring injury in practice on Thursday leading up to the Week 7 game. He practiced in limited capacities on Thursday and Friday before being declared questionable for the game. He played just seven offensive snaps before aggravating his injury on Sunday. The broadcast showed him running a route and his hamstring giving out on him before he took himself out of the game and went to the sideline.
The Chiefs' wide receiver situation is officially in dire straits
Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice are already on injured reserve for Kansas City. Now, the player who helped replace those loses with a 100-yard receiving performance in Week 5 is injured.
The Chiefs are down to four healthy receivers on the team's 53-man roster. Their standing on the team's first "unofficial" depth chart tells you just how die the situation has become. . .
WR3: Justin Watson
WR4: Xavier Worthy
WR5: Skyy Moore
WR6: Mecole Hardman
If you consider the fact that Moore has 82 offensive snaps and has yet to record a catch this year, it's really like the Chiefs have three receivers on the 53-man.
The Chiefs also have three receivers on the practice squad that they could soon rely on in Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, and Montrell Washington. It's not encouraging that, even with all of the receiver injuries they've had to this point, the team has yet to show they trust any of these players to take on a greater role. Andy Reid insists otherwise and that one or more of those players could be elevated for the upcoming game.
"Yeah, really, all those guys on the practice squad, we've got a lot of trust and feel good about," Reid said. "We've talked about it a little bit. I'll get with (Brett) Veach here after we're done, and we'll go through everything. I just came out of an offensive meeting. I had a chance to talk to those guys and see what their thoughts were. And we'll just, we'll see. I haven't had a chance to really get with Veach yet."
It's reasonable with the latest injury to Smith-Schuster that Veach will also continue to do his diligence on the trade market. But even the latest reports there aren't so encouraging. . .
