The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be without CB Jaylen Watson as he suffered a fractured ankle in Week 7's win over the San Francisco 49ers, but there's at least a small possibility that his season isn't over.

According to ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, Watson is slated to have surgery on his injury in the coming days after a battery of tests confirmed the injury. A source tells Fowler that there is an outside chance that Watson could be back for the playoffs, but it's also possible his season could be over.

Ultimately, it'll come down to whether or not they run into anything unexpected in surgery and the success of the rehab/recovery afterward.

Watson dealt with cramping during the Week 7 contest and received treatment from the team's training staff. Upon returning to the game, he suffered an ankle injury. The broadcast crew said he was stepped on awkwardly during the play, but they didn't replay the injury.

Watson, a former seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft, has appeared in 38 career games for Kansas City, including 14 career starts. He emerged as the starter opposite Trent McDuffie this season, replacing L'Jarius Sneed in the secondary. He was leading the defense in forced incompletions (7) and by all accounts was having the best season of his young career.

Watson's reaction on social media shows just how disheartening this injury is for the young player on the rise.

"Love you brother," Chiefs S Justin Reid responded. "Keep your mental strong, always know you will be back and better than ever!"

Hopefully, Watson will have an opportunity to return for the postseason as the Chiefs seek their third consecutive Super Bowl title. If not, perhaps he'll be able to pick up where he left off during the 2025 NFL season.
