One former Kansas City Chiefs player has been in Patrick Mahomes’ shoes – and he has words of wisdom for him
The Chiefs need Patrick Mahomes back at full-strength.
The entire future of the Kansas City Chiefs revolves around Patrick Mahomes. If Mahomes cannot return healthy from his ACL and LCL injuries, the Chiefs are screwed. However, there’s not much to worry about. The injury Mahomes sustained is common, and players often come back from it. In fact, some players can continue to improve after their injury.
Former Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu had that same injury before joining the Chiefs, and his best years were with KC.
Mathieu talks about Mahomes’ ACL and LCL injury
“The injury Pat has, you know, I did that too,” Mathieu said on his podcast. “I tore my ACL and my LCL, and so the process is a little longer. I don’t know if you remember, I came back, I want to say like, maybe like week four or five, but I played with a brace that entire year, right? The whole year. And so the LCL, that’s the lateral part of it, right? So that’s why I played, that’s why I had the brace on. It wasn’t necessarily because of ACLs, because the LCL, right?
“So it is a tough injury, but it’s one that I think he can get through. And I played DB [defensive back]. So if I was kind of able to go to all pros and all decade teams after, I think he is fine. He’s fine, obviously stepping up in the pocket and all that stuff that goes on around your feet as a quarterback that might play in conscious, but I think he will make a full recovery and get back to who he was.”
One of Mathieu’s best coverage years as a defensive back was in 2020 with the Chiefs, where he finished with six interceptions that season. Mathieu tore his ACL and LCL in 2015 and came back perfectly fine. Not only that, but Mathieu was his best self while also winning a Super Bowl.
When you look at the other side of things in this equation, Mahomes doesn’t play as physically demanding a position as Mathieu does. Not only that, but Mahomes is just built differently. We know how he is, whether it was the dislocated kneecap or all the high-ankle sprains he pushed through.
Mahomes is going to be just fine, and Mathieu’s insight should help fans feel better about his recovery.
